A hunting license allows you to hunt legally in Portugal, while a firearm license permits you to own and use firearms. Both licenses have different requirements and regulations.
You can apply for a hunting or firearm license through the appropriate government agency in Portugal. We recommend checking our guides for detailed information on the application process.
The requirements vary depending on the type of license you are applying for. Generally, you will need to pass an exam, provide identification, and meet certain age and health criteria.
Each question needs to be answered correctly 3 times to be considered mastered. Once mastered, a question moves to review and appears less frequently, so you can focus on the ones you haven't learned yet.
Costs vary by category. For categories C and D (hunting), the fee is approximately EUR 85. Additional costs include a medical certificate and mandatory liability insurance. Check the PSP website for current fees.

Portuguese law (Law 5/2006) defines the following classes: Class A — prohibited weapons (automatic, military). Class B — restricted defense weapons, require special authorization. Class B1 — personal defense weapons (pistols and revolvers), require justified need. Class C — rifled-barrel hunting weapons (rifles). Class D — smooth-bore hunting weapons (shotguns). Class E — recreational weapons, air guns, and alarm guns. Class F — collectible and historical weapons.
With license (Class B1): pistols and revolvers require a LUPA B1 license and a justified need submitted to the PSP. With license (Class E): defensive sprays and electric weapons (tasers) require a LUPA E license, which requires justification. LUPA holders of categories C or D (hunting) automatically have access to Class E weapons.
Yes, both are classified as Class E weapons. To purchase them you need a LUPA E license (which requires justification) or a LUPA C or D (hunting), which gives automatic access to Class E. Misuse outside of legitimate self-defense is punishable by law.
