The ICNF hunting license exam (Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas) is mandatory for obtaining a hunting license in Portugal. The multiple-choice exam is drawn from the official question bank and covers topics including hunting legislation, identification and protection of animal and plant species, ecology and habitats, hunting safety, venatoric ethics and first aid. PSP — Firearms License Written Exam (LUPA)
The firearms license (LUPA) is issued by the PSP (Polícia de Segurança Pública — Portuguese national police) and is required for anyone wishing to use or carry firearms in Portugal. The written exam covers firearms legislation, the legal regime for weapons and ammunition (Law 5/2006), safety rules for handling and storage, and accident procedures. Categories C and D, typically associated with hunters and clay shooting practitioners, are the most commonly sought.
PSP — Weapon Identification Exam (LUPA)
The weapon identification exam is the second component of the PSP LUPA exam. Candidates must correctly identify different types of firearms, their constituent parts, operating mechanisms and legal classification. This exam is conducted in person at a PSP examination centre.
FPT — Federação Portuguesa de Tiro Exam
The FPT exam (Federação Portuguesa de Tiro) is required to obtain a federated practitioner licence for Olympic shooting disciplines such as pistol, rifle and shotgun. The theoretical exam covers technical regulations, shooting range safety rules, applicable legislation and sporting ethics.
FPTAC — Federação Portuguesa de Tiro com Armas de Caça Exam
The FPTAC exam (Federação Portuguesa de Tiro com Armas de Caça) is required to practice clay target shooting disciplines such as skeet, trap, double trap and compak sporting in Portugal. The exam covers discipline regulations, safety rules, firearm and cartridge nomenclature, and the legislation applicable to the use of hunting firearms in a sporting context.
